Inspired by Apple IIe games from the past Walking Stick is a recreation of a game I did back in my youth, created in 2011 and now updated for 2024. Join Walking Stick as he ventures across vast lands to save his pet bird Rudy from the evil Lord Byron. 

Options Screen

  • Difficulty: Easy is standard gameplay. Hard multiplies enemy health x 2.
  • Direction: Simple just fire the weapon left or right. 8-Direction allows any weapon (minus the lasers, grenades and bombs) to be fired in 8 directions.
  • Keyboard Style: Choose Apple II method, or ASDW with Mouse
  • Debug: Allows extra commands to be turned on if you want to Cheat. Don’t cheat… :P
  • Note: Once you’re familiar with the game, press ESC to bypass the opening scenario.
  • Reset Game: During gameplay press ESC to bring up a prompt and select YES to return to the main screen.
  • Pause: Press P during gameplay to pause the game.

Keyboard:

Apple IIe Method

  • To Move:  Use the arrow keys.
  • Jump: SPACE
  • Fire: ALT-Key

ASDW Method

  • To Move:  A,D,S,W
  • Jump: Right Mouse
  • Fire: Left Mouse


  • Switch Weapons: Press TAB to move forward in the weapons list. Press SHIFT-TAB to move backwards.
  • Help: F1
  • Save Game: F2
  • Load Game: F3
  • Quit Game: ESC
  • Pause Game: P

Debug Controls On

  • Instant Death: K
  • Dash: F
  • Energy Refill: `


Gamepad

  • To Move: Use the D-Pad
  • Jump: A
  • Fire: X
  • Switch Weapons: L1 or R1

Debug Controls On

  • Dash: B
  • Energy Refill: Y (don't cheat...)

Weapons

  • Standard Weapon: This is your standard bullet that you can fire in 8 directions.
  • Homing Missile: This will bounce off walls and generally go in the direction of the nearest enemy.
  • Bombs: Drops these for a huge explosion to destroy surrounding enemies.
  • Grenades: You can throw these to get a large explosion farther away.
  • Spreader Gun: Shoots bullets in three directions at once.
  • Laser: Shoots a large stream either left or right.

Note: A majority of the smaller enemies can be killed by simply jumping on their heads.

Pick-Ups

  • Coins: Pick up coins for extra points.
  • Double Jump: Allows you to jump twice.
  • Boots: Grants you fast speed for 10 seconds
  • Feather: Allows you to fly by pressing Jump for 30 seconds. While flying press left or right to navigate. Release Jump to fall.
  • Clock: Grants you 50 more seconds to finish the level.
  • Small Red Heart: Adds +1 energy
  • Yellow Heart: Refills energy up completely.
  • Shield: Allows invincibility for 10 seconds. You can pass through and kill all enemies.
  • Exclamation: This is the beginning of the level.
  • End Sign: This is the end of the level.
  • Flag: This is a checkpoint.

You have unlimited lives to get through any level. With great power comes great responsibility.
